World Cup Digest: Day 8

World Cup 2010 has certainly heated up now. Day 8 threw up some fantastic games and it was certainly a day for the underdog as Serbia beat Germany, Algeria held England to a 0-0 draw and Slovenia will have to wonder what might have been as they threw away a 2-0 lead against the USA.

Germany 0-1 Serbia
A goal in the 38th minute from Liverpool's latest signing Milan Jovanovi? handed Serbia an unlikely 1-0 victory over Germany in Port Elizabeth.

Much will be said about Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco, who handed out a total of eight yellow cards in the game and one red to German front-man Miroslav Klose in the 37th minute, just 60 seconds before the Serbians took the lead.

Germany won't quite be able to comprehend how they got nothing from the game. Lucas Podolski missed a penalty, Sami Khedira hit the crossbar and they dominated the possession despite their numerical disadvantage.

The result now leaves Group D looking very interesting. All four teams still have a chance of going through, but the Ghanians can secure their place in the last 16 if they can defeat Australia on Saturday evening.

Slovenia 2-2 USA
The United States can feel hard done by as they drew 2-2 with Slovenia in Johannesburg, despite being two goals down at half-time.

The States mysteriously had a goal from substitute Maurice Edu ruled out in the 85th minute, just three minutes after scoring the equalizer. Why the goal was ruled out is quite unclear as it looked to be the Slovakians committing the fouls, with a number of their defenders holding onto American jerseys.

Looking back Bob Bradley will be content with a point considering the position they were in at half-time, but the Americans must now win their game against Algeria to have any hope of progressing to the last 16.

England 0-0 Algeria
Fabio Capello's men played out a frustrating scoreless draw with Algeria in Cape Town, meaning they must now win their final group game against Slovenia if they are to advance to the last 16.

England left the field with a chorus of boos ringing from their travelling support and really don't look like a team that is capable of winning this tournament.

The USA did England no favours either as they failed to beat Slovenia, setting up an interesting final day in Group C and a predicament I'm sure not many would have foreseen, with the English needing nothing but a win to advance out of the group.
