Russell happy despite 7-1 hammering
His side may have lost 7-1 to Bohemians, but Glenville manager James
Russell says he is still proud of his side.
“This is a fantastic end to the season for the boys. I’m certainly proud of what we’ve done.”
Russell, a cousin to UCD manager Martin, outlined where he thought Bohemians most trumped his side.
“I’m not pleased with the amount of goals conceded but I mean their delivery was always spot on. Their crossing and clinical finishing.”
Russell went on to give an insight into how he prepared his side, of the Leinster Senior League, for playing against the League of Ireland champions.
“I said don’t concede- the pressure is on them. There was no pressure on us. They’ll be criticised for only beating us 7-1. We were in a win- win situation. They could lose no matter what they did.”
The Glenville boss momentarily mulled over might have been: “going into half time, if they hadn’t scored, a bit of doubt might have been in their minds. We conceded so late in the first half, it maybe deflated one or two guys.
Dedication and commitment where certainly not lacking in Glenville’s performance, as exampled by Russell’s comments: “I’d die for these guys and I’d like to think they’d do the same for me. They’re an incredibly honest bunch of players.”
Glenville finished fifth in the Saturday Senior 1A division, and Russell says that the team was expecting promotion this season. “We’re a bit disappointed we didn’t get promoted this year. We lost the last couple of games and drew a couple of games.
We just have to dust ourselves down and in the summer maybe get a few more quality players in and go from there. We’ll do it step-by-step.”
Despite the drubbing they received at the hands of Bohemians, Russell says Glenville’s players can all hold their heads high.
