The board of Drogheda United have announced the appointment on Saturday of Darius Kierans as first team manager.

Kierans had been standing in as caretaker manager since the departure of Alan Mathews from the Louth club on 17 May. Mathews had stepped down after a disappointing start to the 2010 season where Drogheda conceded 33 goals after 14 games played.

The statement released by the board of Drogheda United reads in full:

As caretaker manager in recent weeks, Darius has greatly impressed with his professional approach. We are encouraged to note the positive reaction of the team as reflected in significantly improved performances.

Darius, formerly a promising player for the club whose playing career was curtailed due to serious injury, has been Head of Youth Development for Drogheda United for the last two seasons and coach of the reserves and under 20s for the past five years. He has developed Drogheda United’s youth system into one of the most respected in the country.

Commenting on the appointment, club Chairman Jim MacArdle said “As a local, Darius has the very best interests of Drogheda United to heart and his vision, enthusiasm and confidence is exactly what the club needs at this time. We believe that this is the next logical step in Darius’ career with Drogheda United and we are confident in his ability to bring this club forward”.

As the youngest manager in the league, coincidentally turning 31 today, Darius brings vibrancy and a fresh approach to the position
