Mervue boss not satisfied with draw

Mervue United held cup holders to a 1-1 draw at Morton Stadium on Friday night, but manager Tom French says his side could have got more out of the match.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t come away with the win” stated French. “Obviously I would have taken a draw before the game but in the game itself, with the chances we had especially near the end, I feel we should have finished more of them.”

A superb defensive display from Mervue stole the show in the FAI Cup ties, and French was delighted with his back four.

“Especially one of our lads, Darren [Young] our left back who hasn’t been able to play in a couple of months because he was injured so that was his first game back.”

Right-back Kevin Crehan won most of the plaudits on the night for a series of defensive clearances, and French was similarly delighted with the youngster. “It was his first game playing right back, he’s normally centre midfield. It was an excellent defensive performance but all over we were good.”

French said that the performance against Fingal should give his side momentum when they resume their league campaign.

“It definitely does. When you’re playing against some of the best players in the two divisions and you come away from their home patch even stevens, it gives you a bit of confidence. We need more points on the board: we’re second from bottom.

Hopefully the lads can take the lessons from tonight and move on.”
