O'Neill full of praise for Derry players

Michael O’Neill was less than pleased with his team’s display against Derry City on Tuesday night, despite their progression to the semi- finals of the EA Sports Cup.

“Yeah we made very hard work of it, you know," the Hoops boss began. "We didn’t play well, there’s no hiding that. We didn’t play a high enough tempo, particularly in the first half and when that happens you get that type of game and that type of performance.”

But if he felt that his own side were below par he was quick to praise a Derry City side that featured six changes from their league victory over Waterford United, including several of the Candystripes youth team.

“I think Derry take the credit really, for the younger players in the team tonight. I thought their experienced players did very well for them, I thought Barry Molloy had an excellent game. We won the game and we’re through to the next round but after that it’s hard to find too many positives.”
