The renamed Cork City FC have today added four new players to their senior panel. Defenders John Meade and Kalen Spillane are joined by midfielder Karl Caulfield and striker Derek Varian.

Meade, a left back, has signed from Blarney United and has previous League of Ireland experience with Cobh Ramblers.

Commenting on the signing, Cork City manager Tommy Dunne said: “We have had a relatively small squad for the opening months of the season and we have been looking to bring some more players in. John has trained with us a number of times and has impressed. The fact that he is a left sided player who has previous experience of the league will give us more options also.”

Spillane, a central defender, was a key player for Cork City FC’s youths over the past season, and Dunne says he is pleased to have signed the 18-year-old: “Kalen is a talented young player and I am looking forward to seeing him come into training to see how he does. We will be working with him to help him make the step up to League of Ireland level.”

Caulfield, a midfielder, previously played with the club at Under 17 and Youth level, before moving on to Avondale United. He has most recently been player/manager of Casement Celtic, who he led to promotion this season.

Manager Tommy Dunne expressed his happiness with the 23-year-old’s signature, saying: “Karl has been injured and is just getting back to fitness now. He comes with a good reputation and has good ability on the ball, and I am pleased to have signed him.”

Varian, a striker, has signed from Munster Senior League side Everton, having previously had a spell with Kinsale, and has been capped at amateur level by the Republic of Ireland. The 24-year-old has been a regular goalscorer at junior level, and Dunne expressed his hope that he would give his side more options in attack: “Derek is a strong fit lad, and is quite pacey as well. He has the potential to be a good player and his signing gives us more options up front.”

All four players who have signed will be available for the First Division fixture against Mervue United on Monday, and Dunne also hopes to make further signings in the coming weeks, telling CorkCityFC.net: “We’ve been looking at a number of Munster Senior League players since the season began, and we will be looking to bring a number of players in. There are some promising players out there and we will be looking to offer them the opportunity to step up to League of Ireland level.

“We also hope to bring in a couple of more experienced players to strengthen the squad, both physically and mentally over the coming weeks, and I am hopeful that this will give us more options than we have had over the opening months of the season.”
