Although he left it late to score his first goal for the club, Longford Town midfielder is Craig Mooney is delighted that he helped his side pick up a vital win against Limerick on Saturday night.

As the clock ticked into the final two minutes at Flancare Park it looked as if the Town would hold on for a valuable point but Mooney had other ideas; Mark Salmon flicked the ball into the path of Mooney and he made no mistake slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

After missing a few chances in the first half Mooney was pleased to get finally get on the scoresheet, “It was nice to get the goal,” he told Extratime. “I had a few chances earlier, easy ones that I missed. But we worked hard. I thought we deserved to win and it was nice to score.”

The visitors dominated the first half but couldn’t break the deadlock. After the break the Town took the game to their opponents and created several chances; John Lester also blasted a penalty wide in the 51st minute. Mooney was delighted to grab the winning goal and take the plaudits but the main thing for him was claiming a much needed win.

He said, “We missed a penalty but pushed on from there. We didn’t stop going, it was nice for me to get the goal but great that we got the three points because we needed a victory. We want to push on now from here and move up the table. ”

Despite results not going their way of late Mooney is delighted with the way things have been going for him personally. After making a second half appearance in Monaghan in Longford’s second game he had to wait until the Waterford United game to make his first start for the club. That game didn’t go according to plan for him as he was sent off in the second half but the Town went on to win 2-1.

The midfielder is delighted that manager Tony Cousins kept faith in him. “It was great when Tony gave me a chance against Waterford and I thought I had blown it when I got sent off. But he stuck with me and I’ve tried to repay the faith,” said Mooney.
