Flood hails impact of Kierans
Drogheda United match winner John Flood hailed the impact of new caretaker
manager Darius Kierans following their 2-1 win over Saint Patrick’s
Athletic.
The victory earned Drogheda their first home win of the season and continued their recent good run of form against the Saints. The win also maintained Kierans unbeaten run since he took charge following Alan Mathews resignation two weeks ago.
Speaking to extratime.ie after the game, Flood reflected on his well timed 85th minute winning goal. “Yeah it was perfect, the best time score. I was very happy with that, it was also my first goal in the league as well and hopefully now we can bounce on from this”.
Second placed Saint Patrick’s Athletic proved tough opposition for the Boynesiders, and even more so for Flood as he was often isolated up front on his own against the team with the meanest defensive record in the league. Flood was supported by Gareth O’Connor in the first half, while half-time substitute Colm Smyth played off the former Bray Wanderers man in the second half.
For Flood though, he maintains that playing up front on his own is ‘always worth it’ should the team succeed. “We won, and that was the main thing. It’s not about me playing up front on my own so long as we win”.
Since taking temporary reins over the first team, caretaker Drogheda manager Darius Kierans has guided Drogheda to four points from a possible six. Flood paid tribute to his temporary manager, while he also looked forward to Drogheda’s next fixture, their second round FAI Ford Cup clash to UCD at home.
“It’s all positive with him [Kierans], it’s brilliant. He’s given me confidence, he’s given the team confidence and we’re just working off that. We’ll now look forward to taking on UCD next weekend. We’ve played them a few times this season and not succeeded, but hopefully this time, we can do it”.
