Duggan signs contract extension
Cork City’s Shane Duggan will be staying put at Turner’s Cross until the end of the next season at the least, after the midfielder signed an extension to keep him at the club.
Duggan, who has been key to City’s midfield so far this campaign, joins Ireland U23 defender Stephen Mulcahy as the second player to sign an extension in recent weeks.
“We have been playing very well in the last few weeks and I think we are only going to get better,” Duggan said after signing the new deal. “I definitely believe that we will be challenging for promotion come the end of the season.
“It was a rush to put a side together at the start of the season, but now the club is putting the foundations in place to build for the future. I am very happy at Cork City and I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, as I think this club is going to progress.”
The man who did all the rushing to get a team together in the space of two weeks, Tommy Dunne, was also eager to push home the positive news that two of Cork’s most important players are now staying at the club for at least another 18 months.
“It’s brilliant news. Shane has been an important player for us this season, and the fact that both he and Stephen Mulcahy have signed new contracts shows that they are happy at the club,” said Dunne.
“We will be speaking to more players about extending their contracts with the club, and I hope that we will be in a position to make further announcements in the coming weeks. It is great that we are in a position to talk to players at this point in the season, as it means we will not be under pressure to do so later in the season.”
Meanwhile, in other news on Leeside, Turner’s Cross pub ‘The Bear Garden’ have announced fundraising plans to help the club. 50c from each drink purchased before and after a home game will be donated directly to the club, in an initiative which also sees proprietor Jim Greene unveiling a large banner on the side of the pub.
Commenting on the fundraiser, Greene said “We do very well out of supporters using the pub as part of their matchday routine and we feel this is a mutually beneficial way of returning some support back to the Club. We look forward to extending a warm welcome to all supporters throughout the remainder of the season”.
