Cooke has eye on promotion

After two successive league defeats Monaghan Utd manager Mick Cooke was delighted his side got back to winning ways on Friday night last with a 3-0 win over Longford Town.

Karl Bermingham, Barry Clancy and Philip Hughes were all on target in Flancare Park. The win moved Monaghan back up the table and into fourth; something that pleased Cooke.

“I’m very happy to get the win. That puts us back up the table,” he told Extratime. “Obviously the two defeats to Derry and Shelbourne were disappointing and we knew coming to Longford it was going to be a hard game. I thought we done very well to get the three points.”

Cooke has assembled a fine squad of players and was lucky to keep the bulk of the squad that finished fifth last season. Challenging for promotion is the aim.

“In the years I’ve been with Monaghan we’ve been ninth, seventh and we were fifth last year. The aim was top four and certainly give promotion a go, until Derry and Cork arrived. That gave the league a boost but hopefully we’ll still have our eyes on promotion,” the Monaghan boss said.

The Dubliner admitted that he is happy with the way things have gone so far this season for his side.
“Last year it was eight games before we got our first win. We ended the season very well; we won our last seven games on the spin. We came into the league in that form, okay we had a bit of a blip, against Shels and Derry. The squad is good, good honest squad and I feel we will be there at the end,” he added.
