Cousins not making excuses

Longford Town manager Tony Cousins has admitted he is not going to make excuses for his side’s poor league form but says changes are going to be made in the transfer window.

Friday night’s 3-0 defeat to Monaghan United was the Town’s eighth loss of the season and supporters are beginning to get frustrated. Cousins hopes fans give him time so improvements can be made.

“I’m not going to sit and make excuses,” he told Extratime. “If I’d been sitting in the stands I probably would’ve felt the same way as supporters. The only thing I can say is that we are working extremely hard behind the scenes to try and get players to come in and improve the team.”

“I need to freshen things up. The transfer window can’t come quick enough. I said it before, we have to manoeuvre around what we have and that’s what I will do but I need to bring in a few bodies.”

Speaking about the Town’s dreadful form the boss was honest in his summation. Currently lying third from bottom he has been disappointed with the performance levels of his squad. “We can’t fool anyone; we are not where we are because we are great,” he said bluntly. “13 matches in, it’s not a new team, they should be settled in now."

"Everyone has had an opportunity to play. I don’t want to be chopping and changing my team, I just want players who can perform and be in every week. I haven’t got that. I still hope we can finish in the top half. If we can finish in the top half and I was left next season with 15 players who I thought were good enough to kick on, I’d be happy,” he added.

The Dubliner has identified areas that he wants to strengthen in the transfer window and has already lined up players he feels can make a difference.

“I have ear marked players. I have been busy around the Junior Leagues and I have a few players coming in to train with us; good lads that I think will make it. I want better than what I have. We are not going to throw money at it. I need to look at who can make the difference,” he said.
