Derry City played out a scoreless draw in front of a quiet, and largely absent crowd, against the league's bottom team tonight in what most observers will agree was possibly the worst kind of football they've ever seen. An indifferent beginning gave way to a heartless middle and, but for the introduction of Paddy McCourt and Conor Sammon sometime in the last half hour, we were heading for a miserable ending. Even the straggly-haired wizard however was unable to lift a disinterested home performance and the spectators were left to lose the will to live in peace. I put away my pen and notepad at half time and never had the urge to fish around in my pockets for them again.

To be fair to Galway, they didn't simply try to spoil the game and actually had perhaps more shots or chances than their hosts. Jeff Kenna will be pleased with his charges who came to the Brandywell with a game plan and the performance of the back four, led by the impressive Wesley Charles, left many wondering why Galway are only collecting their second point of the season. Regi Nootimeer and Marc McCulloch also stood out as they tirelessly thwarted Derry's wingers Niall McGinn and Owen Morrison for most of the game.

Two of the last three league meetings between these teams have been draws and after just 10 minutes there was a certain inevitable feeling that tonight was to follow suit. Mark Farren was the Candystripes' only sparkle and, with his lively running, seemed to be trying to make up for lost time on the bench this season. Similarly, Stephen O'Flynn, making only his third start this season for the Tribesmen, also occasionally looked like he wanted to prove something to his employers - and maybe his former employers too.

It's back to the drawing board for Kenny but I'm sure even the mild mannered, genteel, Dubliner will be thinking his boys need nothing more than a kick up the backside.
