Robbie Keane has been confirmed as the new Head Coach of Hungarian top-flight side Ferencváros.

Keane had been out of work since leaving Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv in the summer, where he won a league and cup double. The team also reached the last 16 of the Europa Conference League during his 18-month spell.

The Hungarian league is currently on a winter break, and Keane will link up with his new team, which includes former Premier League and Champions League winner Naby Keita, on Tuesday for a training camp in Spain.

Ferencváros were on the lookout for a quick-fire replacement for the departed Pascal Jansen after the Dutch manager was snapped up by New York City FC in the MLS.

Keane arrives with the Hungarian side sitting in second place, one point behind Puskás Akadémia with a game in hand, as they look to secure a 36th top-flight title and their seventh successive crown.

Ferencváros have played Shamrock Rovers twice in European qualifying rounds in recent years, winning on both occasions.

The Dubliner has been well-travelled during his coaching career since moving to the dugout in 2018, where he began as a player-manager with ATK in India.

Ireland’s record goalscorer, with 68 strikes, has spent time in coaching roles with the Republic of Ireland, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United alongside Sam Allardyce, but was unable to steer the club clear of relegation from the Premier League in 2023.
