Northampton Town have expanded their midfield options by signing Liam Shaw from Fleetwood Town for an undisclosed fee.

The Cobblers triggered the release clause in the 23-year-old's contract to bring him to Sixfields on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The 6ft 3in midfielder began his career with Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 23 senior appearances. His promising performances caught the attention of Celtic, who secured his services in 2021 on a pre-contract agreement reportedly worth £300,000.

Shaw made his Celtic debut during a UEFA Europa League clash against Real Betis in the 2021/22 season, before being loaned to Motherwell for the remainder of the campaign.

Subsequent loan spells followed for the midfielder, including a season with Morecambe in League One during 2022/23, where he featured 39 times across all competitions.

Shaw later joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2023/24 season, making 26 appearances, before moving to Fleetwood Town, where he played 14 matches this term.

Northampton Town manager Kevin Nolan expressed his enthusiasm for Shaw’s arrival, emphasising the club's swift move to secure his signature.

“Liam was one of our top targets and we are delighted to welcome him to the club,” Nolan said.

“He was on the radar of the recruitment team here already, and that aligned with my own thoughts as he is a player I have always regarded very highly."

Nolan highlighted Shaw's attributes, describing him as a dynamic midfielder with excellent technical skills.

“He is someone who I think can come in and make us better. He is a box-to-box midfielder, he likes to get involved, and he is good on the ball too. He has all the qualities you look for in a good central midfielder and on top of that he comes with a good pedigree and is a good age.”
