Southampton finalise signing of Brazilian left-back Welington

Southampton have officially secured the services of 23-year-old Brazilian defender Welington, following his pre-contract agreement earlier this year. The left-back joins the Saints after concluding his time at São Paulo.
Welington signed personal terms with Southampton during the summer transfer window but remained with São Paulo until the conclusion of the Brazilian football calendar. His final season at the club saw him make 48 appearances across all competitions, contributing to São Paulo's sixth-place finish in the league.
The defender, who has 164 senior appearances for São Paulo under his belt, also boasts a string of accomplishments.
A Brazil Under-23 international, he lifted the Copa do Brasil in 2023 and added the Supercopa do Brasil to his list of honours in 2024.
Welington established himself as a reliable presence since debuting at 19, when he featured in a 1–0 Campeonato Paulista loss to Botafogo-SP on 8 March 2020.
Welington now joins the Saints' first-team squad at St Mary’s, where he will wear the number 34 shirt.
