Bournemouth have confirmed the signing of centre-back Matai Akinmboni from DC United on a long-term deal.

The 18-year-old defender, who has represented the United States at youth level, joins the Cherries after attracting interest from several European clubs during his development.

Speaking about the signing, first-team technical director Simon Francis expressed his excitement over the acquisition.

"We are delighted to sign Matai to a long-term deal with AFC Bournemouth," he said.

"He is an exciting young player we have been monitoring for an extended period and have been impressed by his progress. Matai is a player we believe has a very bright future and we are looking forward to seeing him develop with us."

Akinmboni made headlines when he became one of the youngest players to debut in MLS history, starting for DC United in September 2022 at just 15 years and 328 days old.

The defender made 17 appearances across all competitions for DC United after signing a homegrown contract, having previously played for their affiliate club Loudoun United.

On the international stage, Akinmboni has represented the United States under-19s in matches against England, Argentina, and Uruguay, securing clean sheets in two of those encounters. He also made his under-20 debut in November, helping his side to a 3-0 win over South Korea.

Next up for 7th placed Bournemouth is an encounter with Everton in the Premier League at 3pm on Saturday.
