Carlisle United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Callum Whelan from Gateshead FC on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 26-year-old will be available for their upcoming match against Tranmere Rovers this weekend.

Whelan, who began his career in Manchester United’s youth system, has gained experience across various clubs, including Watford, Oldham Athletic, and Solihull Moors. His most recent stint at Gateshead saw him make 63 appearances and score 13 goals over two seasons.

“Cal is someone we’ve been after for a while,” said Carlisle’s Head Coach Mike Williamson.

“He brings energy, hunger, and a high level of technical ability. He’s a great lad who will fit straight in and improve us instantly.”

Speaking to CUTV, Whelan expressed his enthusiasm for the move.

“I’m obviously buzzing and so excited to be here. It's such a massive club, and it's been in the pipeline for a little while now. I’m just delighted to be here and signing.”

Reflecting on his connection with Head Coach Williamson, Whelan added: “I’ve worked with the staff here before, and they get the best out of me. That’s a big reason why I’ve come here.”

Whelan is optimistic about contributing to Carlisle’s campaign: “First and foremost, I’ll work hard and run my socks off. I like to get on the ball and give it to the forwards to let them do the magic. If I can chip in with a few goals, even better.”
