Wigan Athletic sign Joe Hungbo from 1. FC Nürnberg
Wigan Athletic have added to their attacking lineup with the signing of 24-year-old forward Joe Hungbo from 1. FC Nürnberg. The deal sees Hungbo join on a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Hungbo becomes Shaun Maloney’s second January signing, following the arrival of Josh Robinson earlier in the window.
The winger has played in the Scottish Premiership, English Football League, and Bundesliga 2.
Hungbo began his professional career with Crystal Palace’s academy before moving to Watford in 2019.
During his time with Watford, he gained loan experience with Aldershot Town and Ross County. At Ross County, he scored seven goals in 33 games and picked up Young Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Year.
In 2022/23, Hungbo had loan stints at Huddersfield Town, where he made 14 appearances and netted three times. His form earned him a move to 1. FC Nürnberg, where he featured 17 times in the German second tier. This season, he spent time with Rotherham United, making 18 appearances.
Commenting on his move to the Brick Community Stadium, Hungbo expressed his excitement.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve heard some really good things, and the Manager has been one of my admirers in terms of his philosophy. I am an entertainer. I like to get at defenders and make the crowd jump out of their seats.”
Manager Shaun Maloney praised the signing, saying, “Joe can play on either side of our front line, which is a big asset for us. He excels in one-on-one situations and will bring speed and creativity to our attacking play.”
