Shamrock Rovers claim superb draw against Rapid Vienna
Shamrock Rovers are all but set for a place in the play-off round of the Conference League having picked up a superb point away from home against Rapid Vienna.
The Hoops only need to finish inside the top-24 of the league standings to reach February’s play-off round.
And they are sitting pretty in tenth place after maintaining their four-game long unbeaten run.
Rovers already drew at home to APOEL 1-1 before dismissing Larne 4-1 away at Windsor Park last month. They subsequently defeated Welsh champions TNS at home 2-1.
But their draw at the Allianz Stadion is their most impressive yet.
The Austrians took an early lead when Nenad Cvetkovic opened the scoring from a corner-kick.
And for a time it looked as though Rapid would make it a difficult night for Rovers as they subjected their visitors to intense spells of pressure.
But Rovers stayed in the game and they were rewarded in doing so when Johnny Kenny netted a second half equaliser to claim a 1-1 draw.
The former Sligo Rovers attacker had further chances to win it too - but Rovers were more than happy to settle for a point that has likely sent them through to the play-off round of the Conference League.
They play Borac and Chelsea next month in their remaining two games in the League Phase.
