League of Ireland clubs handed €43m boost in Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund

The project to redevelop Dalymount Park has been handed a major boost with €24.7million set to go its way in the latest round of the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund.

Sligo Rovers have also been awarded €16.4m for their redevelopment of their Showgrounds home in the North-West.

Meanwhile, Wexford have also earned €2m, with Tallaght Stadium - the home of Shamrock Rovers - granted €650,000.

But the big news is that Bohemians and Sligo Rovers have been granted major funding for their respective projects.

Dalymount Park has been earmarked for a €40m construction with Dublin City Council agreeing to it earlier this year.

There are plans for the venue to have a new 8,000-capacity, including 6,240 seats and standing space for another 1,794 people.

And ahead of Monday morning’s announcements, Government officials confirmed they will foot most of the bill with a €24.7million sum.

In a document released, it said: “The redevelopment of Dalymount Park will provide an entirely new UEFA Category 3 stadium and football pitch.

“The existing stadium will be demolished to create a brand new four-sided enclosed stadium and re-orientated pitch on the preferred north/south axis.”

The Showgrounds - which is set for a 16.4m upgrade - will be granted a “significant upgrade of the existing arena into a modern multi-sport stadium with community-accessible indoor facilities.”

There was also a boost for Shamrock Rovers with €650,000 granted for the “upgrading of floodlights at Tallaght Stadium to LED standard.”

And Wexford too have benefited with €2m issued their way for a “main pitch development, viewing stand, club hour and training pitches.”

The First Division outfit recently signalled their intent to move to a new venue closer to Wexford Town in September.

They were also approved for €373,841 from the Community Sport Facilities fund on September 25.

This funding predominantly goes towards the grassroots Centre of Excellence soon to be under construction in Enniscorthy.
