Malahide "delighted" to be heading west

Following the draw for the third round of the Ford FAI Cup draw made tonight, most Galway United fans would have been licking their lips at the prospect of a tie against non league opposition on home soil.

However, when contacted by extratime, Malahide United chairman Don Butler expressed his delight at the draw, which amazingly pits his club against Galway manager Sean Connor for the third time in the space of five years.

Malahide travelled to Sligo in 2005 and forced a deserved 1-1 draw at the Showgrounds, before Connor's blushes were spared by an extra time brace from Paul McTiernan in the replay at Gannon Park as Sligo narrowly progressed.

Fast forward two years and again Malahide are on the giant-killing trail, this time hosting Connor's expensively assembled Bohemians side in the third round, with only Glen Crowe's late strike separating the sides.

So is this a cup upset in the making? According to Butler, why not?

"We are looking forward to it, we are in the final of the Leinster Senior League Metropolitan Cup, and on our day, when we are playing well, we can give anybody a good game. We will travel west in the hope of getting a win."

When contacted, Connor expressed his "delight" at the draw and relief at getting a home tie, which will hopefully generate some much needed funds for the cash-strapped club with the possibility of a good cup run to follow. Still, a more pressing challenge than may have been at first thought now awaits The Tribesmen on the weekend of June 6th.
