St Patrick’s Athletic claimed an important win on Friday night over Galway United as their European charge gathered pace.

The Saints have now won seven games on the spin and are fourth in the table under former Ireland Stephen Kenny as their manager.

But they had to battle throughout all 90 minutes to see off the Tribesmen on Friday night.

Former Sligo Rovers striker Aidan Keena opened the scoring for the Athletic in the first half, before Ed McCarthy’s stunner brought the sides level in the second period.

However, Keena had the final say when he netted the winner in the 68th minute.

St Pat’s will now face Derry City next Friday knowing a win would see them leapfrog the Candystripes into second place for a brief period at least.
