League Preview: Longford Town -v- Cobh Ramblers

LONGFORD TOWN

Longford Town welcome First Division rivals Cobh Ramblers to Bishopsgate in their final home league game of the campaign on Saturday night (kick-off is at 7.30pm).

The Red and Black have struggled throughout this season but a draw at home to Athlone Town last weekend lifted them off the bottom of the table.

And boss Wayne Groves admitted that, while he is happy his side have improved in recent weeks, he and his players are not where they would like to be in the table.

“There's a lot of positives for that but let's be honest about it, it’s not where we want to be,” he told his club’s match programme ahead of the game.

“The only thing we can take credit for as a staff is that we kept the players going and they haven't stopped.

“They've been accountable for that and that’s probably been a huge success in the sense that we could have easily just thrown in the towel. We're delighted that didn't happen so we just have to keep going.”

COBH RAMBLERS

Cobh Ramblers won a second game on the spin last Friday night with a 2-1 triumph over Munster rivals Kerry at St Colman’s Park.

Ramblers defeated Athlone Town 2-1 away from home a fortnight ago and backed it up with another important success in the battle for seventh place with Treaty United.

Jason Abbott gave Gary Hunt’s side an early first half lead when he slotted home a penalty kick in the 8th minute for the hosts.

But that lead lasted for just 15 minutes when Cian Brosnan equalised for the Kingdom.

Kerry won 2-0 on their last visit to St Colman’s in the FAI Cup but were without striker Ryan Kelliher who has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

And Conor McCarthy’s side were undone in the second half when Abbott scored again 20 minutes from time.

Referee: Glen Geraghty.
