League Preview: Wexford -v- Kerry
WEXFORD
Wexford host Kerry at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night looking to shrug off their narrow FAI Cup semi-final defeat to Drogheda United last Sunday (kick-off is at 7.45pm).
The Slaneysiders know a win over the Kingdom would all but secure their playoff position.
But there will likely be some regret that they did not reach the FAI Cup final having run Drogheda United so close at Weavers Park in a 3-2 loss.
“It definitely was [there for us],” manager James Keddy told RTÉ Sport. “I'm very proud of the boys. They're very young but we gave set plays away and defensively we weren't good enough.
“We worked on them all week and it's disappointing because we did enough to win the game.
“The game was there for the taking. As I said to them, sometimes you have to lose to learn how to win. The hurt inside the dressing room, it's difficult, but that's football.
“A little bit of experience told in the end. As I say, we have to get ourselves up for Kerry next week and I wish Drogheda all the best in the final.”
KERRY
Basement side Kerry can lift themselves off bottom spot if they pick up a point against Wexford.
But a defeat, coupled with a possible Longford Town win over Cobh Ramblers on Saturday evening would see Conor McCarthy finish bottom of the First Division for the second year on the spin.
Though McCarthy is hoping things will turn for his luckless side who lost 2-0 away to Cobh Ramblers last weekend
“We always try to put our best foot forward in every game,” he said. “Wexford will be no different on Friday. We know it’s an important game so we will go there and be positive and try our best to get a result. The same story goes for the following week.
“It’s important to end the season with good, positive results.”
