League Preview: Athlone Town -v- Cork City
ATHLONE TOWN
Athlone Town welcome First Division champions Cork City to the Athlone Town Stadium on Friday evening knowing a win would secure a playoff spot (kick-off is at 7.45pm).
The Co Westmeath drew 1-1 against neighbours Longford Town last weekend and are keen to seal their top five finish as soon as this weekend.
In fact, they might even secure their berth without picking up a point this weekend should Finn Harps lose away to Bray Wanderers on Friday evening.
But Athlone will be confident they can spring a shock against the Leesiders having beaten them 1-0 already this season.
However, they have to do it without Dylan Hand who is suspended.
CORK CITY
Cork City visit Athlone Town on Friday evening with defender Charlie Lyons unavailable due to suspension.
And the Leesiders also head to Co Westmeath with a point to prove having lost 1-0 to Athlone away from earlier this season.
But boss Tim Clancy is hopeful that he can claim all three points while also handing some fringe players game time.
“It will be lads getting game time again but it is also about trying to win as well, so we want to remain unbeaten,” he told the Cork Echo.
"We have lost one game this season which was away to Athlone, a game we shouldn’t have lost and that was a sore one, so we will try to finish the season now with only one defeat and that continues next week against Athlone.”
Referee: Daniel Murphy.
