St Patrick’s Athletic crowned Leinster Senior Cup winners
St Patrick’s Athletic have won the Leinster Senior Cup for the tenth time in their history.
The Saints defeated Leinster Senior League top-flight outfit St Mochta’s 2-1 in the decider at Richmond Park on Tuesday night.
And it was a long evening of action at the Inchicore venue as an issue with the floodlights caused a delay to proceedings.
But the Athletic shrugged off the false start to take the lead after 25 minutes through Ireland underage international Michael Noonan.
Played before a healthy crowd of 1,088 in Dublin 8, Stephen Kenny’s men doubled their advantage on the hour mark through Kian Leavy.
Despite that, Mochta’s battled bravely and competed well against a Saints side that boasted first-team names such as Leavy, Jason McClelland, Cian Kavanagh, Aaron Bolger, Conor Keeley, Ryan McLaughlin, Luke Turner and Al-Amin Kazeem.
And Brian McCarthy scored a late consolation from the penalty spot with Gareth McCaffrey slotting home in the 93rd minute.
But it was not enough as St Pat’s claimed victory.
