Leinster Senior Cup Final Preview: St Patrick’s Athletic -v- St Mochta’s

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC

St Patrick’s Athletic host Leinster Senior League top-flight outfit St Mochta’s in the Leinster Senior Cup Final at Richmond Park on Tuesday evening (kick-off is at 7.45pm).

The Saints reached the decider by virtue of a 3-1 win over Maynooth Town in the semi-final of the competition.

But boss Stephen Kenny has used the Leinster Senior Cup as an opportunity to blood players with the likes of Michael Noonan, Rhys Bartley and Jason Oyenuga in senior first-team environments.

In that win over Maynooth, teenager Noonan scored twice for the Saints with one coming from the spot.

Prior to that victory over Maynooth in the last four, the Saints defeated Bray Wanderers 3-0 in the quarter-finals at the Carlisle Grounds in May.

Should St Pat’s come out on top, they will claim their 10th Leinster Senior Cup crown. They last won the competition in 2019 - winning 4-0 against Athlone Town.

Kyle Robinson, Brandon Holt, Jake Walker and Daniel Dobbin all netted for St Pat’s on that occasion. Referee on the day was Alan Patchell, the same official who will be the whistler for Tuesday’s latest showpiece.

ST MOCHTA’S

Seeking to become the first amateur side to win the Leinster Senior Cup since 1999, St Mochta’s come into the Leinster Senior Cup decider in form.

Brian McCarthy’s side saw off UCD and Usher Celtic in the group stages to advance to the knockout stages and top Group D earlier this year.

They also drew 2-2 with St Patrick’s Athletic earlier in the same stage of the competition.

Mochta’s, who came second in the Leinster Senior League top-flight, then defeated Premier Division Dundalk 2-0 in the last eight at home with Dean Casey scoring twice on that occasion.

And they subsequently backed that up with a penalty shootout triumph over Drogheda United after drawing 2-2 at home in August. Glenn Shannon and Casey both netted in that outing.

Since then, Mochta’s have enjoyed a strong start to their league with three victories in their first four outings.

They have also advanced through two rounds in the FAI Intermediate Cup, edging past Bluebell United and Montpelier both on penalties.

They are also in the last 32 of the Metropolitan Cup after seeing off Castleknock Celtic 7-1 in the previous round.
