The past weekend saw the opening fixtures of the 2024/25 Munster Senior Cup take place.

The historic competition dates back to 1901 and remains much coveted in the southern province.

Last season saw Waterford claim a 16th title by defeating first-time finalists Kerry in the Turners Cross decider.

The first-round draw featured a number of intriguing ties, none more so than the all-Premier Division meeting of College Corinthians and Ringmahon Rangers.

The Mahon outfit were 3-2 winners on Saturday, setting up a second-round tie with Passage.

Rockmount were the last non-League of Ireland winners of the competition, and they secured their passage into Round 2 with a 4-2 victory over Lakewood.

They will now face an Avondale side that proved too much for Blarney, winning 2-1 in Carrigaline.

St Mary’s saw off Park United 5-1 in Kilcully to set up a meeting with Carrigaline in the next round, while Leeside were 3-1 winners against Kanturk, earning a trip to Macroom in the process.

In an all-Second Division clash, Temple United defeated Youghal in a 6-4 thriller after extra time.

Extra time was also required for Bandon’s 3-1 victory over Castleview in West Cork. Temple will now face Ballinhassig, while Bandon will visit Carrigtwohill.

Given the format of the draw, a number of second-round ties were also able to take place over the weekend.

Mayfield maintained their solid league form with a 3-1 win at home to fellow First Division outfit Riverstown.

Wilton shocked Premier side Midleton with a 2-1 victory in Knockgriffin, with former Cobh Ramblers and Cork City attacker Liam Cronin finding a late winner.

Leeds dispatched Fermoy 3-0 to secure their third-round berth alongside League of Ireland opposition.

The remaining ties to take place in the second round will see Cobh Wanderers host Everton and Douglas Hall entertain Mallow.

Finally, there was one MSL Premier Division tie this weekend, as UCC opened up their 2024/25 league campaign with a 1-0 defeat at home to Cobh Wanderers in The Farm.
