Dean Ebbe’s first-half penalty propelled Athlone Town to a valuable win over UCD in their quest to secure a playoff spot.

The Co Westmeath lost four league games in a row prior to Friday’s late 2-1 victory over Treaty United.

But a triumph over the Shannonsiders set them up nicely ahead of Monday’s showdown with the Students - and they were able to build on that with a 1-0 win.

Ebbe struck in the 39th minute to get the job done with Athlone now on 51 points. They are now seven points clear of sixth-placed Finn Harps, while UCD stay on 53 points in second.

Meanwhile, Treaty United ran out 3-0 winners away to Munster rivals Cobh Ramblers at St Colman’s Park.

The Shannonsiders were winless in six prior to their trip to Cork but finally managed to end that barren run of results.

Lee Devitt’s brace and Nikodem Kozlowski 48th minute strike proved crucial for Tommy Barrett’s side.

Ramblers, however, have now lost five in a row and slipped back into eighth place as a result.
