League Preview: Athlone Town -v- UCD

ATHLONE TOWN

Athlone Town welcome promotion playoff rivals UCD to Lissywollen on Monday night (kick-off is at 7.45pm).

Athlone snapped a worrying run of four league defeats in a row with a late 2-1 victory over Treaty United at the Markets Field on Friday.

Oisin O’Reily handed Tommy Barrett’s side a first half lead.

But the game was turned on its head just four minutes into the second period when Treaty goalkeeper Corey Chambers was sent off.

Treaty, however, looked like hanging until Athlone levelled in the 78th minute via Kyle Robinson.

And they were undone at the death with striker Dean Ebbe scoring a 95th minute winner. Athlone now sit on 48 points, four clear of sixth-placed Finn Harps with five games to play.

UCD

On Friday night, UCD moved onto 53 points with a routine 2-0 triumph over Cobh Ramblers.

Skipper Ronan Finn made his 500th League of Ireland appearance in the game but it was goals from Sean Brennan and Mikey McCullagh that got the Sky Blues over the line.

It means the Students can secure a top-five position as early as Friday against Wexford if they defeat Athlone Town on Monday night.

Willie O’Connor’s men have also won five of their last seven league games, losing once to champions Cork City (1-0) and drawing against Wexford (1-1) at home.

Referee: Oliver Moran.
