Kevin Doherty hailed his Drogheda United players as they clawed themselves closer to safety on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Bohemians.

The Boynesiders are now four points clear of basement side Dundalk with a game in hand on Jonm Daly’s men.

And they are also closing in on eighth-placed Bohs in the battle to avoid ninth and a relegation playoff.

While only five points behind, Drogheda have played a game more than the Gypsies.

But Doherty hailed his side’s effort and form even if he conceded Bohs may not be caught by his side.

“The first half was so good attacking-wise and defensively,” he said after Frantz Pierrot handed Drogheda all three points.

“We were very unlucky not to go 2-0 up when Frantz hit the post. We had to dig in in the second half and our goalkeeper had to make some saves but I thought we were really, really good. I think we deserved it.

“Frantz was sensational tonight and has been for a long time. He obviously gets the winner which is great for him, but even Douglas James-Taylor was sick all week.

“He didn’t eat and he didn’t drink and then to go and play there. Luke (Dennison) makes a couple of brilliant saves too but I thought we stood up.”

The victory was Drogheda’s fourth in five in all competitions.

“We have been in good form for quite a while,” Doherty added. “It’s easy to be in good form when you can see your players will do anything for you on the pitch, which they have done since I have come to the club, bodies on the line.

“I don’t like to keep going on about it, but some of my players were at work this morning, and to be able to come here and do what they did was unbelievable.”
