FAI Cup wrap: Bohemians, Drogheda United and Wexford stroll into semi-finals

Drogheda United cruised into the last four of the FAI Cup on Friday night with a convincing win over First Division Athlone Town.

But the Boynesiders’ night was soured somewhat by a red card shown to defender Jack Keaney late on.

Kevin Doherty’s troops saw off Dundalk (2-1) and Wilton United (9-0) to reach the last eight of the FAI Cup and have now reached the semi-final stage with a 4-1 triumph away to Athlone Town.

And the Co Westmeath side were behind as early as the 11th minute when Douglas James Taylor handed them the lead.

The Walsall loanee doubled Drogheda’s advantage six minutes into the second half before Ryan Brennan made it 3-0 on his 200th appearance for the club.

Adam Foley completed the rout in the 81st minute but Keaney was sent off shortly after - with Dean Ebbe scoring a consolation for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Wexford were also big winners against First Division rivals Treaty United - winning 4-1.

The Slaneysiders raced into a 4-0 lead before the half-time break with a brace each from Divin Isamala and Thomas Oluwa.

Striker Trpimir Vrljicak scored a consolation for the Shannonsiders late on in the second period.

And at the UCD Bowl, Bohemians thumped 10-man UCD 4-0.

The Students were outclassed in Dublin 4 by their Premier Division opponents with Ross Tierney’s two-goal haul setting the Gypsies on their way to the last four.

Alex Greive and Martin Miller rounded off the scoring after Niall Holohan was dismissed for the hosts heading into the final half hour.
