Munster Senior League Round-Up | Ringers in form as Hall defeat Rockmount
For most MSL sides, their league fixtures are now up and running following a busy pre-season and Keane Cup schedule across the board. There has been plenty of action throughout the three senior divisions, and our new weekly lowdown on extratime.com takes a look at the action to date.
Ringmahon are the early pace-setters in the Premier Division. They saw off St Mary’s 3-1 on Friday night to make it two wins from two for the Mahon men. Ethon Varian, who arrived from Cork City earlier this year, was among the scorers for a side who will expect to occupy the higher reaches of the table this year.
Douglas Hall are the other side on six points after a very impressive display on Friday, defeating Rockmount 1-0, with former Cobh Ramblers trainee Eric Nolan netting the winner.
Avondale sit third on four points after their 0-0 draw at Cobh Wanderers on Friday evening. Former Longford, Cork City, and Cobh Ramblers netminder Paul Hunt kept a clean sheet on his Wanderers debut.
Last season’s champions Midleton impressed in a 5-0 rout over newly promoted Leeds in Knockgriffin this weekend. Jake Hegarty and Jamie Collins were among the goals for the East Cork men, leaving Leeds still looking for a first win after three games back in the top tier.
In the First Division, Mayfield sit top at this early stage. A 3-3 thriller at Wilton saw the Northside outfit drop their first points of the campaign, but it could have been worse were it not for James Cotter’s late spot kick.
Everton are another side eyeing promotion this season and sit second after a 3-2 win at home to newly-promoted Lakewood. Eric Hayes notched an injury-time winner to leave them a point off first place.
Carrigaline and Castleview are two sides who’ve tasted Premier Division football in recent times, and it was the former who came out on top this weekend, the hosts winning 2-0 at Ballea Park to leave Castleview pointless after two games.
Riverstown saw off Blarney 2-1 to join Everton on six points, while last year’s Second Division champions Leeside stood out in a 3-0 win at Bandon, who are just down from the top tier.
Finally, in the Second Division, Passage occupy top spot with three wins from three, their latest an 8-0 rout away to bottom-placed Buttevant. Ballinhassig and Mallow drew 1-1 to leave them both on seven points, with Fermoy’s draw at Macroom also leaving them on seven.
Kanturk notched their first win of the season, defeating Temple 3-0, while Carrigtwohill were 3-2 victors over Youghal at Ballyadam Park. It was also a good weekend for Park, who saw off Kinsale 4-1 in Mitchelstown.
