Swindon Town have confirmed the signing of midfielder Gavin Kilkenny from AFC Bournemouth on a two-year contract.

The 24-year-old Irishman joins Swindon after gaining considerable experience in the English Football League, with over 40 appearances across the Championship and League One.

Kilkenny has had stints at several clubs through loan spells in recent seasons. He played a role in Bournemouth’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2021/22 season and later featured for Stoke City in the Championship.

During the 2022/23 season, he was on loan at Charlton Athletic in League One before moving to Fleetwood Town, where he played until the end of the season.

Reflecting on his move to Swindon, Kilkenny expressed his enthusiasm for the new chapter in his career.

"It's great to be here. It's been in the works for the last couple of weeks and I'm now delighted to get it done," he said.

"It felt like it was the right stage of my career now, with the age I'm at. I just felt right and I needed a new home and now I feel like it's time for me to make this place a permanent home for me."

Swindon's Head of Football, Jamie Russell, highlighted the qualities Kilkenny brings to the team.

"We are delighted to secure the signing of Gavin Kilkenny as we feel he brings the right kind of attributes to what we are looking to add to our midfield going forward," Russell said.

"He has had a lot of EFL experience at higher levels with both his former club AFC Bournemouth and also during loan spells with Stoke City, Charlton and Fleetwood Town, so we are delighted he's seen us as the right next step for his career and we look forward to working with him and the skills and attributes he brings to the team."

Kilkenny has represented the Republic of Ireland across five youth levels, from the Under-16s to the Under-21s.
