Former Cork City youth Mark O’Mahony was ‘delighted’ after scoring his first senior goal for Brighton on Tuesday night.

The Ireland under-21 international was on target for the Seagulls in a routine 4-0 EFL Cup win over League One side Crawley Town.

And it was an important moment for the teenager, 19, who appears set to join Championship side Portsmouth on a season-long loan.

“I missed one in the first half that I should have put away so I knew I had to put one away,” Corkman O’Mahony said on his strike.

“I was delighted to score my first goal.”

Former Carrigaline United schoolboy O’Mahony spent pre-season with Brighton’s first-team squad and has impressed new boss Fabian Hurzeler.

But given the wealth of striking options available at the Premier League side, he will be keen to prove himself on loan this season.

“It has been different but it has been good,” O’Mahony said on working with his new manager.

“The lads are starting to understand the whole new set-up and to be fair, this season and pre-season has shown we are doing well with it.

“There are always areas to improve on but it has been really good.

“Whatever happens (with my future), it is in the club’s hands. I know they are very good at picking pathways for young players and whatever that means after tonight, I trust the club. We just have to wait and see.

“The club gives young players a chance and you get to prove it on nights like these. I scored but there are other things I can improve on.”

While at Cork City, O’Mahony played 13 times for the first-team before joining Brighton in January 2023.

And he also made his Premier League debut for Brighton last season under former boss Roberto De Zerbi - featuring three times.
