LSL Senior Sunday wrap: Usher Celtic and Malahide United claim late wins, while Maynooth Town defeat St Francis

Usher Celtic began their LSL Senior Sunday campaign with a statement victory over St Mochta’s on Friday night.

The 2023 Leinster Senior Cup finalists have enjoyed a fine run to the top-flight of the LSL in recent years and they will be keen to prove it was no fluke this season.

They have even been able to add former Shelbourne, Longford Town and Drogheda United attacker Dylan Grimes to their ranks this season.

But it was their old guard who helped them into a 2-0 lead against St Mochta’s inside 42 minutes.

Calvin Douglas, 26, opened the scoring after just 15 minutes with captain Leroy Staunton doubling their advantage three minutes before the break.

St Mochta’s responded in the second half and were on level terms by the 69th minute as Liam Brady halved the deficit initially before Ciaran Grogan levelled.

But Graham Curran had the final say to win it for Usher by slotting home a late spot-kick for Wes Doyle’s side.

There was also late drama at Gannon Park when Malahide United came from behind to see off Glebe North

Reece Weldon handed Glebe a 15th minute lead but Darius Kierans' men were undone in the second-half with a double from Sam Verdon.

Verdon, 28, had been without a club since leaving League of Ireland First Division side Longford Town at the start of the 2023 season.

But he made up for lost time with his local side when scoring in the 66th and 95th minute to win it for Kevin Craven’s charges who won the Metropolitan Cup last season.

Meanwhile, Maynooth Town went top of the table with a thumping 4-0 win over ten-man St Francis at Rathcoffey Road.

Evan Murphy began the rout with a fifth-minute opener before Niall Lanigan was dismissed just 11 minutes later for the Saints.

Patrick O’Sullivan and Lewis McKeon also netted for Maynooth with Youcef Belhout also scoring an own-goal.
