Cambridge United have announced the loan signing of Josh Stokes from Bristol City.

The 20-year-old forward, who initially rose through the ranks at Ipswich Town Academy, joins United on a one-year deal, marking Garry Monk’s tenth acquisition of the summer transfer window.

Stokes began his senior career with AFC Sudbury at the age of 17. After two years at the club, he made a move to Aldershot in the National League at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Stokes’ impressive form at Aldershot, where he netted 16 goals in 31 appearances, caught the eye of Championship side Bristol City, who signed him in January 2024 on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Despite his move to Bristol City, Stokes was loaned back to Aldershot for the remainder of the season.

Now, the young attacker is set to spend the 2024/25 season with Cambridge United.

“I am really excited for this opportunity,” said Stokes.

“I want to try and make my mark on the team and have a really good season both for myself and the club.”

Reflecting on his rapid rise through the leagues, Stokes added, “It’s been a whirlwind few years for me but this is a great chance for me to show what I can do in the EFL. My chats with the manager have all been really positive and I can’t wait to get going.”

Cambridge United manager Garry Monk expressed his enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “Josh is a great young player who has worked extremely hard to progress through the leagues in such a short space of time. To do so takes not only talent, but an outstanding attitude and mindset.”

Monk further commented, “We believe he has high potential and will be a big contributor to the squad this season. I am delighted to welcome him to the club.”
