Southampton have officially signed 20-year-old midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Sporting CP on a five-year contract.

The midfielder, who began his journey at Olhanense before joining Sporting in 2016, quickly ascended through the youth ranks, earning a spot in Sporting’s B team at just 17.

His talents also caught the eye of national selectors, leading to his representation of Portugal across various age groups, from Under-18s to Under-21s.

Last season, Fernandes gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Estoril, where he made 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga. His contributions helped the club reach their first cup final in eight decades.

Speaking about his move to England, Fernandes expressed his excitement, saying, “I’m very happy to be here, it’s a dream come true to come to England and play in the Premier League. It’s the best league in the world, in my opinion. It has the best coaches, the best players, the best teams. It’s good for me, for my growth and I’m happy.”

He also mentioned his knowledge of Southampton’s history, citing former players José Fonte and Cédric Soares as familiar names.

“I know some things about Southampton. I know about the city. I know José Fonte played here, Cédric, so I want to talk to them,” he added.

Southampton manager Russell Martin shared his enthusiasm for the club’s new signing, noting, “Mateus is a player we have been monitoring for a while and someone we are really excited about. He brings great energy, retains possession well and always looks for the forward pass.”

Martin also highlighted Fernandes’ ability to contribute immediately, stating, “He is young and full of enthusiasm to come and play for Southampton. With the ability he has to drive forward from midfield, we think he has some key attributes to really help us – not just in the future, given his age, but here and now in the Premier League.”

Fernandes is eager to adapt to his new environment and contribute to the team’s success, saying, “I want to help the team, but I’m new in England so I need help from them too! I want to help the team and enjoy the Premier League with the guys this season. I think I can help when we have the ball and when we don’t have the ball.”
