Manchester City sign defender Layzell from Bristol City
Manchester City have confirmed the signing of 20-year-old defender Naomi Layzell from Bristol City, securing her services until the summer of 2028.
Layzell, who will don the number 3 shirt, played a role in Bristol City’s promotion to the Women’s Super League during the 2022-2023 season.
Expressing her excitement about the move, Layzell said, "It’s quite surreal to be honest. You always want to play for the top teams as a young player, and I think joining City is an exciting opportunity for me."
Layzell played 20 out of Bristol City's 22 matches in their promotion-winning campaign, where the team conceded only 12 goals. Reflecting on her time at Bristol, she added, "I grew so much as a person at Bristol City, but I felt it was time for me to find a new challenge. I’m really excited to get involved."
Head Coach Gareth Taylor expressed his optimism about Layzell's future at City, saying, "We’re pleased to add Naomi to the team for next season. She’s a quality defender, and we’re looking forward to helping her grow and develop as a player."
Layzell progressed through Bristol City's youth ranks and she made her first-team debut in October 2020, helping her side secure a 4-0 victory over London Bees in the Continental Cup. Her Barclays Women’s Super League debut against Manchester City resulted in a heavy 8-1 defeat.
After Bristol City's relegation in 2020/21, Layzell was instrumental in their return to the top flight. Her efforts did not go unnoticed, as she was awarded both the Young Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year honours by her former club.
In addition to her club achievements, Layzell has also made strides on the international stage, earning her England U23 debut in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and training with the Lionesses’ senior squad in recent months.
