Victory tastes all so sweet for French

Mervue United were forced to wait until their 11th game of the season before celebrating victory, so no wonder manager Tom French is on a high after the win over Finn Harps.

The Galway-based club escaped from Finn Park last Friday with a 3-2 triumph, although there were more than a more nervous moments for the Mervue boss as Harps fought back.

But they did enough to seal the win and add a one to the win column that had remained blank up to when the final whistle went last week.

"I'm delighted with the result on Friday and especially picking up 3 points, our previous game versus Monaghan was also a good point for us after going down to 10 men after 63 minutes," said French.

"We had an excellent start against Finn Harps going two up after six minutes. When they got one back just after half-time we were on the edge a bit. The lads worked there socks off to keep us in front and thankfully Rory Gaffney got a third for us.

"When they got one back there was a few tense moments as I was dreading another repeat of the Salthill game were they equalised with the last kick of the match.

"We won't get carried away with the win as we know we still have a lot of work to do to get ourselves back up the table. The result has been a while coming but it was only a matter of time after our recent performances."
