Arsenal winger Charles Sagoe Junior joins Shrewsbury on loan
Shrewsbury Town have secured the services of Charles Sagoe Junior on a season-long loan from Arsenal. The 20-year-old winger, who recently signed a two-year contract extension with the Gunners, is set to strengthen Shrewsbury's attacking options.
Sagoe Junior had a brief loan spell with Swansea City in the Championship last season. Manager Paul Hurst expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, noting the club's persistent interest in the player.
"I'm really pleased to get Charles Sagoe Junior on board because I think we have been lacking options in that wide area," Hurst said.
"He is a player that we have been after for some time - we were interested in him during the January window."
Hurst believes that Shrewsbury’s long-standing interest played a crucial role in securing the loan deal.
"I think the fact we have been interested in him for some time has helped our case in getting the deal over the line," Hurst added.
"Now we need to get him up to speed because his pre-season has been a little bit different due to him going away with Arsenal."
Although Sagoe Junior has had some game time during Arsenal’s pre-season, Hurst is aware of the need to manage his fitness.
"We will do all we can to get him up to speed as quickly as possible - whether that is off the bench or whether that is starting games and seeing how long he can go for," he said. "We are delighted to get him in."
