Away day blues finally over for Cousins

Longford Town manager Tony Cousins is delighted that his side have finally broken their away day hoodoo after defeating Salthill Devon 3-0 on Saturday night.

Second-half goals from Simon Kelly, Peter Hynes and Derek Glynn ended Town’s wait for an away victory. By keeping their goal intact they also kept their first clean sheet of the season. Cousins was happy with how the game went for his side.

"We had the right attitude from the start of the match. I told them at half-time to keep plugging away and they’ll get their chances which they did," he told Extratime.

"The clean sheet was crucial for us especially coming up to the next series of games. It’s great to get the three points. To jump ahead of Harps is good too. Instead of looking below you, you’re now looking ahead.”

What also pleased Cousins about the win was that Glynn got on the scoresheet. The striker had a dip in confidence in recent weeks but played his part when he was introduced for the second half.

"To get the goal is massive for him. I played up front myself and I know where he is coming from. I’m delighted to see him scoring. I thought he played very well,” said the Town boss.

Looking back on the opening series of game, it’s been topsy-turvy for the Town. They picked up just four wins and had to wait until the final game of the series for their first away win.

There were some shambolic displays too with Cousins apologising on more than one occasion for his team’s performance.

Cousins is hopeful things will improve in the second series of games. The players now know what’s expected off them. He has a vision for the club but admitted he needs to be given time.

"The majority of managers in the First Division have more than one season under their belts. They’ve had time to work with their squads and to change them, I’ve had 11 games,” the Dubliner stated.

"We can do better. The players know each other a lot more now and they know what I’m looking for off them. If we can progress this year and get ourselves into the top half of the table I’ll be very happy.

"I’ll have a basis to work on for next year. Like Mick Cooke has done. If we can do that we are moving in the right direction.”
