St Patrick’s Athletic have reached the playoff round of the Conference League - setting up a mouth-watering date with Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir.

The Saints deservedly triumphed 2-0 on aggregate, with a 1-0 win at home backed up with a 1-0 success away from home.

Former Ireland under-21 winger Zack Elbouzedi netted the winner for Stephen Kenny’s side, with the former Ireland boss managing for the 50th time in Europe on Thursday night.

The Athletic will now face Istanbul Basaksehir after the Turks dismissed Georgian side Iberia 1999 3-0 on aggregate.

“Its unbelievable,” defender Tom Grivosti told his club’s media team. “Getting two clean sheets in Europe against good opposition is not easy.

“It was not easy coming to Azerbaijan and it was tough in the first half. But we battled through and Zack got his goal. It was an unbelievable feeling.”
