Manchester United complete transfer of Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich
Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt in a deal that keeps him at Old Trafford until June 2029, with an option to extend for an additional year.
25-year old De Ligt has already secured league titles across three different countries, having lifted the trophy with Ajax in the Netherlands, Juventus in Italy, and Bayern Munich in Germany. His impressive résumé includes 324 club appearances and 45 international caps.
Upon his arrival, De Ligt expressed his enthusiasm about joining Manchester United, citing the club’s rich history and the opportunity to reunite with manager Erik ten Hag, who played a crucial role in his early development.
"As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I felt an excitement about the opportunity for a new challenge at such an historic club," said De Ligt.
"Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me and I cannot wait to work with him again."
De Ligt also emphasised his commitment to success, adding, "I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club."
Manchester United’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, highlighted the impact De Ligt is expected to have on the squad.
"Matthijs is an outstanding defender and proven winner who will add quality, experience, and leadership to our existing group of senior players," Ashworth said.
"He has already enjoyed considerable success in his career, and we are convinced that his best years are still ahead; we want to help him achieve them at Manchester United."
