Manchester City defenders Luke Mbete and Kian Breckin have embarked on season-long loan spells, joining Northampton Town and Crewe Alexandra, respectively.

Luke Mbete, soon to turn 21, has joined Northampton Town in a move that sees him continuing his development away from Manchester City.

Mbete, who began his journey with City as an under-12 from Brentford, made his professional debut in September 2021 during a Carabao Cup match against Wycombe Wanderers.

His career has seen him gain experience across multiple leagues. He spent the 2022/23 season with loan spells at both Bolton Wanderers, where he made nine appearances, and Huddersfield Town in the Championship, playing six times.

The following season, he was loaned to Den Bosch in the Netherlands, where he made 26 appearances and scored twice. Mbete has represented England at the under-21 level on two occasions.

Jon Brady, Northampton Town's manager, expressed his excitement about the new addition to the squad.

“We are very pleased to bring Luke in,” said Brady.

“He is very highly rated by Manchester City, and we thank them for trusting us to continue the development of one of their young players. Luke has a decent amount of experience in the Championship, League One, and also abroad. He has been in and around the Manchester City first team, both on their bench in the Premier League and also playing regularly during pre-season.”

Brady added, “He is keen to develop, and from our conversations, we know he is very keen to come here and play his part. He fits our profile. He has a lot of attributes as a brave defender but also an intelligent footballer who is comfortable on the ball.”

In a similar move, Manchester City’s midfielder Kian Breckin has joined Crewe Alexandra for the season.

The 20-year-old, who has previously had a loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers in League One.

Breckin, who has won the Premier League 2 title with Manchester City, is the son of former Nottingham Forest and Chesterfield defender Ian Breckin.

Kian Breckin could make his debut in Crewe Alexandra's upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Rotherham United, set to kick off Tuesday at 7:45 pm.
