Former Millwall striker Aiden O’Brien joins Shelbourne
Shelbourne have confirmed the signing of forward Aiden O’Brien.
The 30-year-old forward joins the Reds on a multi-year contract after a long career in the English Football League.
O’Brien most recently played for Shrewsbury Town and has had stints at clubs such as Portsmouth, Sunderland, and Millwall. Over his time in England, O’Brien amassed 188 league appearances and netted 68 goals.
Born in Islington, London, O’Brien started his professional journey with Millwall, where he spent nine years and made over 200 appearances before departing in 2020. His career also included brief periods at Gillingham and Sutton on loan.
The forward has also earned five caps for the Republic of Ireland at the senior level, scoring his first international goal against Poland in 2018, which was later recognised as the FAI International Goal of the Year.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, O’Brien stated, “I am pleased to join Shelbourne and embark on this new adventure. This decision was largely supported by the excellent staff and manager... I have heard such good things about the team and can’t wait to be part of it."
"Moving to Dublin was a big decision; my grandmother was born there... It feels like the right decision for me and where I am in my career.”
Shelbourne manager Damien Duff emphasised the significance of the signing, saying, “Important moment, important signing. Exciting times, exciting player. Aiden brings a wealth of experience and quality but most importantly presence, personality, leadership... Aiden was desperate to come which I found so refreshing... He lives for pressure and responsibility so he has come to the right place at the right time.”
