Liverpool's Luke Chambers rejoins Wigan Athletic on season-long loan
Liverpool defender Luke Chambers has rejoined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.
The 20-year-old, who initially impressed Wigan fans during his loan spell last season, is eager to continue his development under Shaun Maloney’s guidance for the 2024/25 Sky Bet League One campaign.
Chambers, hailing from Preston, boasts an impressive track record despite his young age. A European Champion with England at U19s level, he was also part of Liverpool’s first-team squad for the first half of the 2023/24 season.
The left-back made his debut for the Reds against Leicester City and went on to make three appearances in the UEFA Europa League. He also debuted for England’s U20 squad in matches against Italy and Germany.
Chambers joined the Latics in January and quickly became a key player. He played at both left wing-back and left centre-back, helping the team secure a mid-table finish and avoid relegation.
His performances earned him the Christophe Duchamp Player of the Month award for February and saw him score his first professional goal against Portsmouth.
Reflecting on his return, Chambers said, "I am really looking forward to getting started. I’ve spoken to the manager a lot and the style of football that we play is the best step for my development. I love everything about the club - the fans, my teammates, the manager and the backroom staff- and it was an easy choice. It’s a really exciting project for the season, and hopefully, we can push on for promotion."
First-Team Manager Shaun Maloney expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are really pleased that Luke has returned to our Football Club. Luke was outstanding for us last season, and we've worked very hard over the summer to bring him back for the upcoming campaign. He is an extremely talented player, who already understands the values of our Club, and has bought into our project. I am looking forward to working with Luke, and helping him continue to develop."
