Midfielder João Neves joins PSG from Benfica
Paris Saint-Germain have completed the transfer of 19-year-old midfielder João Neves, who signed a five-year contract with the club.
Neves, originally from Tavira in Portugal’s Algarve, began his football journey in 2012 before joining SL Benfica's youth system in 2016.
Neves quickly ascended through Benfica's ranks, signing his first professional contract in December 2020. He played a role in the club's Youth League victory in 2022 and made his first-team debut later that year on 30 December against Braga.
The midfielder became a regular starter, contributing significantly to Benfica's Portuguese league title win in 2023 and gaining Champions League experience at just 18.
The 2022-2023 season saw Neves establish himself further, scoring his first professional goal against Sporting Lisbon on 21 May 2023. He started the following season strong, helping Benfica secure the Portuguese Supercup with a win over FC Porto and earning his first international cap for Portugal in October 2023.
Neves has since made nine appearances for the national team, including two matches at Euro 2024, where Portugal reached the quarter-finals.
Expressing his excitement about the move, Neves said, “I'm very proud to be joining Paris Saint-Germain, a very ambitious club. I'm going to give my all to help my team-mates, to grow at this fantastic club and to win numerous titles.”
PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to welcome João Neves to the Paris Saint-Germain family. João is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally."
"He was so passionate to join Paris Saint-Germain and determined to fight for the jersey - which is what we expect of all our players. We continue to build a fantastic young team at Paris Saint-Germain - based on teamwork, talent and collective spirit - which is the foundation of our club's great future.”
