Hungarian international Szabolcs Schön joins Bolton Wanderers
Bolton Wanderers have strengthened their squad with the signing of Hungarian wing-back Szabolcs Schön.
The 23-year-old, capped eight times by Hungary, joins the club from Fehervar on a three-year deal. This marks the club's fifth signing of the summer.
Manager Ian Evatt praised Schön's attacking abilities, noting, "Szabi is our first move into the European and worldwide market. He has an incredible background, from being a kid at Ajax to a full international with Hungary who has played in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley."
Evatt emphasised the importance of welcoming Schön, stating, "The most important thing now is that we make him feel really welcome. He’s moving away from home again and away from his family, and as a Bolton Wanderers family, we need to make sure we support him and make sure the transition is as seamless as possible."
The Hungarian’s signing comes as part of new employment laws adopted by the FA, allowing League One and Two clubs to recruit up to two players based on their international pedigree. Schön had attracted interest from other EFL and European clubs before choosing Bolton.
Schön began his career at Dutch giants Ajax before returning to Hungary to play for MTK Budapest, where he scored 16 goals in 62 appearances. His time in the MLS saw him provide six assists for FC Dallas before returning to Hungary with Fehervar, helping them qualify for the European Conference League.
After securing Fehervar's passage to the third qualifying round of the competition, Schön arrived in England to finalise his move to Bolton. He joins former Hungarian international goalkeeper Adam Bogdan at the club and will wear squad number 23.
