Premier Division round-up: Shamrock Rovers claim late win, Galway pile misery on Dundalk and Drogheda draw with Bohs

Champions Shamrock Rovers closed the gap on leaders Shelbourne to just 10 points with a 2-1 win over Waterford at the RSC on Friday night.

The Hoops know they can ill-afford any more slip ups if they are to claim a fifth league title in a row.

And they claimed all three points in the South-East with Graham Burke blasting home an 85th minute winner.

Teenager Cory O’Sullivan opened the scoring for Stephen Bradley’s side in the first half.

Rovers were pegged back in the early stages of the second period through Blues’ Christie Pattisson.

But Burke ensured Shamrock Rovers left with all three points when he blasted home in the 85th minute to keep their slim title hopes alive.

Meanwhile, Dundalk were plunged further into the relegation mire following a 2-0 loss at home to Galway United

The Lilywhites needed a win against the Tribesmen to find some breathing space in their battle to avoid automatic relegation.

But they were unable to claim one as Galway snapped a four-game away losing streak.

Stephen Walsh opened the scoring for John Caulfield’s side in the 54th minute, before doubling his tally in the 87th minute.

The Tribesmen sit on 37 points in fifth, level on points with third and fourth placed Shamrock Rovers and Waterford as a result.

However, Dundalk are now just two points clear of basement side Drogheda United.

Kevin Doherty’s side picked up a point on Friday night after drawing 2-2 at home to Bohemians.

And Drogs even took the lead against the Gypsies at home with new recruit Shane Farrell arrowing a superb free-kick into the top corner from distance after nine minutes.

But the Boynesiders were pegged back ten minutes later when Dayle Rooney scored a penalty for the visitors.

And Alan Reynolds’ men took the lead just four minutes after equalising with James Bolger turning into his own net from a Rooney corner-kick.

Drogheda levelled on the hour mark with Cian Byrne turning into his own net.

It could have got worse for Bohs late on following Leigh Kavanagh’s dismissal in second half injury time, but they held on for a point to move into seventh spot.
